Does Canvas detect AI writing?
Canvas can display AI-writing reports from connected services when the institution enables and configures them. Uploading a file to Canvas does not, by itself, tell you which checks apply. Identify the assignment's integration and your course policy; do not confuse an AI report, a similarity report and a quiz activity log.
| Information | What it concerns | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| AI-writing report | A connected service's assessment of submitted text. | Who wrote the text or whether misconduct occurred. |
| Similarity report | Text matching the sources covered by the checking service. | Whether a matching passage is improperly used or whether AI wrote it. |
| Quiz activity log | Recorded actions and timestamps during a quiz attempt. | A reliable verdict about AI authorship or cheating. |
How Canvas can receive AI-writing reports
Instructure's Document Processor FAQ explains a workflow in which connected services process assignment submissions and return reports to Canvas. It specifically describes support for AI detection reports. The feature is opt-in and requires institutional configuration.
Turnitin documents its Canvas Assignment Workflow, including assignment configuration and access to Similarity and AI-writing reports. These instructions establish that an integrated workflow exists. They do not establish what any particular school has licensed or enabled.
That distinction matters when reading broad claims about Canvas. “My school uses Canvas” identifies a learning platform. It is not a complete description of the assignment's document-checking configuration. A statement about one course should not be generalized to every institution using the same platform.
How to find out what applies to your assignment
- Read the assignment instructions. Look for the allowed use of AI, required disclosures and any named checking service.
- Identify the report you are discussing. Record its name and provider. A percentage without a report label can easily be misinterpreted.
- Ask the instructor about the workflow. A useful question is which service processes that assignment and what reports are considered during review.
- Check the relevant institutional policy. Course-specific instructions may be more restrictive than a general statement about permitted writing tools.
- Keep your working material. Preserve notes, source records and draft versions that explain the development of your submission.
Do not infer the full configuration from the absence of a student-visible score. This page does not determine an institution's reporting permissions. Ask for clarification when you need to understand which report is being used or how to obtain a copy.
Do Canvas quiz logs prove AI use?
No. Instructure's quiz-log guide says the logs are intended to help investigate quiz problems and are not intended to identify cheating. It also explains that autosave can affect recorded events for some question types.
A log entry and an authorship judgment answer different questions. Before interpreting an event, establish what the documented event actually means, what generated it and whether the record is complete. Avoid turning an isolated timestamp into a conclusion that the documentation does not support.
For students, the useful response to a question about a log is to explain the work and provide relevant context. For reviewers, it is to follow the institution's process and consider the evidence together. This guide is not a set of instructions for avoiding activity records.
How to interpret an AI-writing result
Turnitin's report guidance describes possible misclassification and warns against using the report alone for adverse action. Interpret a result using the provider's documentation and the actual document rather than assuming the number is a direct measurement of authorship.
A similarity percentage and an AI-writing assessment should not be substituted for each other. When a concern is raised, identify the relevant passages, what the report is claiming and what other evidence is available. Your drafts, notes, source material and explanation of the argument may address questions that a score cannot answer.
The separate Turnitin guide provides product context. The essay editing checklist focuses on whether a rewrite preserves arguments and citations.
Does using a humanizer change the Canvas workflow?
Editing the text does not tell you which integration or policy is in place. A humanizer changes the submitted content; it does not establish permission to use AI and does not guarantee a particular report result.
Review any rewrite for altered claims, missing qualifications and broken attribution. A sentence that sounds smoother may be less accurate. If the assignment allows editing assistance, stay within its limits and disclose assistance when required. If the policy is unclear, resolve that question before submitting.
Read the evidence review on humanizers for the distinction between output quality and detector outcomes. No bypass percentage is reported for Canvas or Turnitin on this page.
Common questions
Does every Canvas assignment use Turnitin?
Do not assume that it does. Determine the configuration of the actual assignment. A documented integration is an available workflow, not evidence that every course uses it.
Can the same platform show different reports?
Yes. The Document Processor documentation describes multiple returned report types. Check the named provider and report type before interpreting a result.
Is a quiz log an AI detector?
No. The documented quiz log records quiz activity. It should not be presented as a text-classification system or a conclusive misconduct finding.
What should I do if I think a report is wrong?
Use the institution's review process. Ask which passages and report are at issue, provide the relevant drafting evidence and explain your sources and reasoning. Avoid making assumptions about a score before seeing the actual report.
