Blackboard's built-in SafeAssign is a plagiarism checker, not an AI detector. AI detection requires Turnitin integration. Here is how to tell which your course uses.
Blackboard (now called Anthology Learn) does not have a native AI detector. AI detection in Blackboard comes from SafeAssign, Blackboard's built-in plagiarism tool, and from Turnitin integration where institutions have it configured.
The critical distinction: SafeAssign is a plagiarism checker, not an AI detector. It compares submitted text against a database of existing documents. It will not flag AI-generated text as AI-generated. Turnitin integration, when enabled, adds full AI detection capability on top of plagiarism checking.
| Tool | Plagiarism Detection | AI Detection | Native to Blackboard |
|---|---|---|---|
| SafeAssign | Yes | No | Yes |
| Turnitin | Yes | Yes | No (integration) |
Many Blackboard institutions use only SafeAssign, meaning they have plagiarism detection but no AI detection. Others have added Turnitin via integration and have full AI writing detection. The experience varies significantly by institution and even by course.
If your course uses SafeAssign only, there is no AI writing detection active. AI-generated text will not be flagged as AI by SafeAssign, though it may still be flagged for plagiarism if the content matches existing documents.
When Blackboard is integrated with Turnitin, instructors can enable the Turnitin AI Writing Report for specific assignments. This gives full AI detection capability with the same accuracy as standalone Turnitin. The submission process may route through Turnitin's interface or show Turnitin results within Blackboard depending on the integration configuration.
